Spreading perennial herb with hairy branched stems. Leaves opposite, elliptic to lance-shaped, sessile, joined across stem by membrane. Membrane with a few " hair-like" projections. White tubular flowers with four lobes at each leaf axil along the stem. Flower usually with only two sepals. Fruit green, elliptically shaped, hairy, ridged and at each leaf axil. Reproduces by seed, roots and stem fragments. Favor moist to wet sites. Found from New Jersey west to Missouri, south into the Gulf States
