Erect to spreading spiny perennial from rhizomes. Leaves, alternate, wavy-edged to coarsely lobes and with spines along midrib. Leaves with small star-shaped hairs with four to eight spreading rays. Flowers, white to pale-violet, clustered. Fruit smooth, round, yellow "tomato-like" berry with many seeds. Reproduces by seed and rhizomes. Found in the eastern half of the United States, west to Kansas, Texas and California. Also occurs in southern Canada and Mexico.
