Tufted annuals or perennials with leafy stems. Leaf blades flat. Ligule papery. Seedhead of many spreading branches with many spikelets, each with two to twelve flowers. Spikelets on the lower side of the branch. Flowers often with hairs on the nerves. Reproduces by seed. Occurs in disturbed and waste areas and low moist to wet sites, ditches and fields. Found from New Hampshire to Indiana to North Dakota south into Florida, and West into Texas, Arizona, California and Oregon. Also found in Mexico, Central America and South America, and the West Indies.
