Erect annual with smooth leaves. Leaf sheath with hairs on upper margins. Ligule a short fringe of hairs. Seedhead narrow, elongated, dense, and fuzzy. Individual flowers with stiff long hairs on the margins. Reproduces by seed. Found in cultivated areas, roadsides, lawns, waste places and pine woods. Occurs from New Jersey south into Florida and west to Texas. Also occurs in the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, South America, India and Tropical Africa.
