Tufted perennial from a rhizomatous crown. Triangular stems erect, on to several per tuft, unbranched to the seedhead. Leaves very narrow, flat to rolled. Leaves immediately below seedhead, shorter than seedhead. Seedhead a dense cluster of flowers. Scales of flowers brown with a papery margin. Reproduces by seed. Found in brackish areas and dry waste areas. Occurs in southern peninsula of Florida. Also found in the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Old World Tropics.
